What to expect

  • Boats

You will be responsible for providing your own boat to access the island. Canoes and kayaks are most convenient, but motorboats are also welcome. There is a 10 horsepower limit for motors on Stevens Pond.

  • Toilet

There is a groover bucket style toilet on the island with a small privacy tent. We use compostable bags in the bucket, which are then taken off the island and disposed of at the end of your stay. We use Bio-Gel to turn liquids into gel for easier disposal. Toilet supplies are provided.

  • Getting There and Parking

Liberty is located 30 minutes from both Augusta and Belfast. We access the island using the public boat launch located on Route 173. You can leave your car in the lot during your stay on the island. The island is about a 20 minute paddle from the boat launch. Directions are provided a few days before your check-in date.

  • What Should I Bring?

We’ve prepared a handy packing list for you! This will give you a better sense of what is already on the island and what you’ll need to bring. Feel free to reach out with specific questions.

  • Check In

You can check in anytime between 2pm and 1 hour before sunset (we try to avoid boating in the dark). You’ll be given a map and directions to find the island. It in an easy paddle from the boat launch.

  • Check Out

Check out is by 11am. You’ll be responsible for checking yourself out and there will be a short list of things to do before you leave to make sure that the island is “closed up” before you depart. This includes taking your trash with you and removing any leftover food from the island.

Some of our most common questions…

Is there electricity?

Naturally, the island is off grid. We do have a plug’n’play battery that is designed to charge phones and other small devices. The majority of our lights run on solar or are battery operated, so you won’t be completely in the dark! Do be prepared to use electricity sparingly.

Pro tip: Bring a headlamp! This is the most convenient way to move around in the dark.

WHat if I don’t own a boat?

There are a few companies that rent kayaks and canoes nearby, Seaspray Kayak in Brunswick and Maine Sport in Camden, they also deliver.

What is the cancellation policy?

10% is due at the time the reservation is made, this is refundable up to 30 days prior to your reservation. You can cancel your reservation up to 7 days prior to check-in, less the 10% reservation fee. Final payment is due 7 days prior to the reservation date. Within 7 days of the reservation date, refunds are not available.

Can I bring my pet(s)?

We love pets! We do allow dogs on the island, but keep in mind that we abide by the Leave No Trace rules and expect you to clean up after your pup. Additionally, if your dog is a digger, this might not be the best place for them!

How many people can come to the island?

The island has been designed to comfortably accommodate two people. This means we provide linens and beds for two people. If you are interested in bringing more people, please get in touch!

Is the island private?

The island is private and will not be occupied by anyone else during your stay. You will likely see people paddling by throughout your visit, make sure to wave hello! Additionally, we try to keep the music at a lower volume between 10pm and 7am, nothing too crazy, but sound travels readily on the water!

Is there cell service on the island?

There is! We also provide an internet hot spot should you need a stronger connection for movie nights or those pesky zoom meetings.

Can we bring alcohol/drugs?

You are welcome to bring and consume substances that are legal under Maine State law. Keep in mind that a driving a boat under the influence carries the same penalties as a DUI in a car.

What if an accident happens?

You are responsible for yourself and your safety while on the island, but we set you up for a safe visit and help you prepare for any accidents. We expect visitors to be capable of handling themselves in the weather, on the water, around the fire pit—and whatever else nature might throw your way. Of course, we understand that the best laid plans don’t always come to fruition. The closest hospitals are in Belfast and Augusta, each 30 minutes away. We do require all guests over the age of 18 to sign a waiver acknowledging that they are responsible for themselves during their stay.
